What have I thought of the show so far? I love KyoAni. I expected to love K-On!, and I wasnt disappointed; so far it may actually be fair to say that it exceeded my initial expectations. This is a show that is not only cute, but also funny and relaxing, and also with the potential to have some awesome music. (Particularly if the end theme is any indication. It’s one of the best end theme’s I’ve ever seen). When it comes to cute girls doing cute things in cute ways, KyoAni always knows what they’re doing, and they’re masters at it.
Episode 4 brings us swimsuits, beach antics, music training and extreme overdoses of Mio-moe. In other words, a great episode; often ‘they got to the beach’ episodes of anime, particularly the slice of life variety, fall into a load of cliches and become tedious, but the K-On! version of this tried and true staple manages to instead be entertaining in a variety of ways instead of relying on fanservice alone.
Mio decides that that their musical skills really arent going anywhere, and when she finds a tape of the previous Light Music Club’s performance she is spurred to action; announcing a training camp for the group so they can hone their skills.
I’d like to mention that so far I really like all the K-On! girls alot, yet Mugi seems a little too ‘flat’, and hasnt done much to separate herself from every other kind, rich young lady character. With this in mind however it was pretty amusing to have Mio ask her if she had a villa (as the kind rich young lady characters always seem to) and then was surprised when she said yes. It was as though the series knows that Mugi is still pretty cliche, so I’m hoping we’ll see more depth to her personality in future. Anyway, using said villa the girls have their training camp at the beach. Not the best idea as it’s full of distractions.
Eventually they remember the reason they even came and try to hurry up with their music training. Ritsu and Yui are being intentionally lazy; both of them would rather not do a live show and want to do something else for the school festival.
Ritsu wants a maid cafe, because Mio, she says, is perfect for it. Just in case we doubted her word we are treated to an approximation of how this would look, and 98% of the world’s otaku go into simultaneous convulsions.
We finaly get treated to some actual practice in which the shocking discovery is made: Yui can play by ear? And she’s not half bad! I just have to say…the scene with Yui playing in front of the fireworks was amazing. It looked spectacular! Seeing just her alone having that much fun playing makes me really want to see the whole band doing the same. I have high expectations for whenever this happens, so I better not be let down!
They all listen to the past Light Music Club’s tape again and decide that their goal for now is to get better than them. And I just know that it’s going to be a whole load of fun watching them get there.
Now that Yui seems to have picked up a few more skills, I hope we get to see them playing together in the next episode. (For some reason, it didnt seem like anyone else really got any practice in for this episode. Ritsu banged the drums a little, but Yui did the most). On top of that…I wonder if they’re going to give their band a name? Unless it’s just K-On!
Another highly entertaining installment in a highly entertaining series. This episode gets this many melonpan:
