Episode five shows us more of the character Sawako-sensei; who had some breif cameos in previous episodes. When I heard that episode five would show us more of this music teacher I wondered how it would fit in with the overall plot. Of course, Kyo-Ani had a real ace up their sleeve with this one, and Sawako manages to make this episode the most amusing so far.
After looking some more at the box the former Light Music Club left behind and finding some interesting photos, the current Light Music Club suddenly learns that they still arent recognised as an actual school club yet.
Although they learn the reason for this is because Ritsu, who was in charge of filling out the club registration form, forgot to do it, and then forgot that she forgot. Once this is settled they reach another obstacle; their club doesnt have an advisor. They decide the best candidate for this job would be Sawako-sensei, a music teacher. And do I detect some yuri? Mugi seems to have a gigantic crush on Sawako…
Sawako at first has to decline their request; she says she’s already the advisor of the Woodwind Club. However, the girls refer to something interesting they found in the club-room before. That photo, could it have been….? Sawako knows exactly what they are talking about, and the following scene is one of the most amazing hilarious to come up in this series yet.
Sawako is desperate to not let anyone see that photo, but the girls have already removed it from the album, and sneaky Ritsu wants to use it as blackmail, even! But this sweet-natured teacher couldnt possibly be the same ex-club member that produced the creepy song that scared the hell out of Mio, right? As much as she wishes to deny her past, she transforms as soon as a guitar is put in her hands.
Eventually the girls manage to win her over the potentially yandere teacher as their advisor, (after getting the Most Hilarious Flashback Sequence Ever) and it seems she’s ready to give them a slew of tips for improvement. First of all, she’s quick to point out their lack of vocals. The songs dont even have lyrics!
When Yui tries to sing however she reaches the humorous conclusion that she is unable to play guitar and sing at the same time. Really, Yui is complete and utter ‘Retard Moe’. Sawako decides to give her a special training regime to be able to master the incredibly difficult act of multi-tasking, but it eventually ends in failure when Mio loses her voice from it, three days before the school festival.
This has been the best episode of K-On! yet. Every character quirk is on display here; Yui’s blatant ditzy retardness, Mugi’s gentle sincerity (and now, as we learn, ‘infatuation), Ritsu’s silly “Oh well!” attitude and of course, Mio’s undeniable moe scardey-catism. Not to mention another highly amusing quirk, that of Sawako, to add to the mix. This episode really fired through the jokes at a fast pace without being overwhelming, and there wasnt a single place I felt bored. And now, I’m looking forward to the next episode more than ever; the girls’ first performance, and Mio’s going to sing! Through the first 4 episodes I’ve watched, K-On! was becoming a series I loved more and more. Episode 5 sealed the deal for me; this has just become a favourite. And for that, out of 5 melon-pan:
