First live! First live! I am fangirling so hard right now.

First live! First live! I am fangirling so hard right now.

To say “this is the episode we’ve been waiting for” would be like Captain Obvious’s Understatement of the Century. After 5 episodes of rooting for them, the girls of the Light Music Club put on their first live show at the School Festival. And what a performance it was! At first I was a little suspect that the live show would end up bearing too much resemblance to the episode of a certain other extremely famous Kyoto-Animation production in which there is a live show at a school festival, but rest assured, whilst it is faintly reminiscent, it’s a whole new experience.

Its Yui, Granny Version!

It's Yui, Granny Version!

It’s the day of the festival and Mio seems to be the only one who is extremely nervous; the other girls are all leisurely helping out with various events, much to Mio’s dismay who would much rather they get some last-minute practice in. She goes looking for each of them in turn, only to find they are currently busy with their shifts, so she has to practice on her own for a while. Yui still has her broken, croaky voice from the last episode, and every time she opened her mouth I burst out laughing because of her voice. (at first I thought she was trying to sound like an old woman, but she cant help it…) There’s also a rather cute little moment where Mio goes looking for Mugi, and Ritsu tells her she’s in the haunted house.

Ritsu really does get a kick out of seeing Mio be terrified. But then again, dont we all?

Oh, there you are Mugi! :D

Oh, there you are Mugi! 😀

IYAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

"IYAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Once the girls manage to get together again, Mio, although she had tried to calm herself down from getting worked up over having to be the singer, starts to beg Ritsu to sing instead. She even goes as far as saying that she’ll play both the bass and the drums if Ritsu sings (is that physically possible?!) Her confidence is drained further when Sawako-sensei reappears, telling the girls she wants them to wear the outfits that she worked so hard to make for them when they perform.

Ta-daaaaaa! I wish I could have such cute clothes, let alone be able to make them in such a short period of time.

Yui and Mugi are kind of thrilled with the dressup idea. But was anyone else wtf over this? Where did the maid and skumizu come from? They disappear after this scene, too!

The girls eventually manage to re-convince Mio, and then we get a neart little segment where Ritsu rehearses how she ought to introduce the ‘band’ on stage. Although Mio seems to be the favourite character by default for everyone, this episode made me realize even more how much I love Ritsu. She’d be my favourite if Mio’s moe power wasnt so overwhelming.

Guitar, yui! Oh man Yuis face cracks me up.

Keyboard, Mugi!

"Keyboard, Mugi!"

Bass AND vocals, Mio!

"Bass AND vocals, Mio!"

And drums, Ritsu!

"And drums, Ritsu!"

And then, it’s time for the show proper. Now, the colours in the stage scene were absolutley gorgeous. Not only were all the girls in those lovely dresses (especially Mio, who looks amazing in that outfit), the red curtain behind the girls as well as all the shiney intruments instantaly gives you a clue as to where all the budget for this episode went. It really is a great-looking scene. And that’s before they start playing.

Last second pep talk...

Uh-oh, stage fright!

Its okay Mio, youre friends are here! Aaaaah gorgeous shot of Ritsu.

And then, Mio starts to sing. Now, the singles for both the opening and ending to this show have topped the music charts in Japan, and if they release a single of this song, ridiculous lyrics and all, it’ll definitley be a hit likewise. I was surprised how good the song was despite the humorous lyrics (‘fuwa fuwa time!’), something about the tempo and rhythm made me think of Tommy Heavenly6. I personally cant wait until the release an album of K-On! songs because I’d be on that straight away. Anyway, instead of showing the whole performance, Kyo-Ani gives the live a unique little twist by suddenly switching to something like an actual PV for the song, as though the girls really were in a real poprock band. It was great, and the sense of fun silliness in it really did give the sense that these girls were an actual band. Especially when they’re all in the car together. If they were a real band, they’d be my favourite band.

The girls end with a raucous round of applause for their show, which was well-deserved. I cant believe Yui can play so well already! It seems like Mio may finaly be able to overcome her shyness. Except for the fact that she then trips and flashes the entire audience her stripey underwear. To all the fanboys that got so butthurt over KyoAni’s ‘creative’ way of censoring this: cry moar, it was far more amusing this way and made the scene far more memorable than a standard panty-flash would have.

We cut to an extreme close up of blue and white stripes and a blue and white striped rice-bowl. Fanboys fall on their knees and cry.

Aside from poor Mio’s ever-bruised pride, the first live was a roaring success, for both the Light Music Club girls and for Kyo-Ani. I loved this episode so much, and I cant wait to see where things go from here. More songs, more outfits, more unfortunate stage mishaps? More flashbacks involving the unbelievably adorable mini-Mio?

For a memorable performance, adorable antics and more reasons for me to love Mio and Ritsu, this episode gets…full marks. That’s right, this is the first review on this blog to get 5 out of 5 melonpan.
