...Uh-oh.

...Uh-oh.

I cant believe I’m up to episode 11 already, the second last episode of this insanely funny trap-comedy. This episode was fantastic, and makes me hope all the more harder that Shaft are going to announce a second season. In fact, the need for a second season is extremely evident in this episode, and his name if Father Kanae. We saw him in the background towards the end of episode 10, and, as I anticipated, episode 11 introduces him formerly, and he is definitley one of, if not the best, character in the whole series. So let’s have a little look at why.
As the episode starts, we meet the priest, a young and good-looking guy who is trying to suppress the very unholy urges he has been having that come from a healthy young man working around cute young schoolgirls. He’s developed a crush; however, perhaps unluckily for him, it wasnt a ‘girl’ that he fell for. Not that he knows it of course.  The episode has barely started and I’m already in fits of laughter as the priest babbles on and on in his mind about his love for Mariya, and then suddenly Matsurika as well. I was instantly reminded of Minami-ke’s Hosaka; someone who also happens to be an amazing character, although so far Father Kanae seems a little more…’sane’. At least, his ramblings are only in his head to himself and not blurting out of his mouth. Yet, for some odd reason these thoughts actually do fly out of his head, visibly, inlittle squares of pink kana and kanji. Whether this was a stylistic choice of Shaft or is in the original manga as well I’m not sure. (But I’m definitley going to check out this manga in my upcoming Japan exchange, and I’ll review it here too) His attention eventually shifts to Kanako, and that’s where the real fun begins.

Priest-vision!

Priest-vision!

Kanae seems to have heard quite a lot about Kanako, and jumps to the conclusion that she is suffering some kind of illness. He decides it his priestly duty to return her to ‘normal’, which will prove to be harder than he anticipated as he obviously failed to factor in the whole “Kanako is terrified of males and breaks into hives if they touch her” thing in.

These are surely symptons of some horrific, terminal illness. I love when it shows the manga pages randomly, by the way.

I love how Kanako is so terrified she spurts out random gibberish and Kanae starts analyzing it to a ridiculous extent

Mariya is quite amused by the preist, and since he’s pretty much aware of the fact that said preist is in love with him, decides to use him for his own amusement. Of course, he just likes seeing Kanako suffer. Mariya’s a sadistic little ass, but I love him. So he tells Kanae about why Kanako is afraid of him, except not really. He tells him that he reminds Kanako of…

I laughed pretty hard at the running joke of Disease. Of course, Kanae thought it was a real disease.

Kanae immediantly goes into over-analysis mode, and it was absolutely hilarious….particularly when he goes to other teachers trying to find information about ‘Tchaikovsky Syndrome’. He then has  a Brilliant Idea when he next sees Kanako:

The definite antidote for trauma!

The definite antidote for trauma!

His ridiculous attempts to console her are only egged on by Mariya, who is pretending that ‘she’ wishes Kanae to ‘restore Kanako’s smile’. In truth of course he’s just incredibly amused by all this, as am I. I dont think I’ve ever laughed so much in one episode of anything. Kanae is eventually led to visit Kanako in her dorm-room to talk with her there. However, there is a certain Dorm Mistress to get past.

Im surprised he even made it into the dorm building itself, actually.

Its pretty amusing that this shows only male characters (to be given any spotlight) thoughts are less perverted than Kanakos. Then again, he is a preist.

Remember what I said about Kanae's 'thoughts' flying out of his head?

This part of the episodes was one of my favourites; Kanae has to resort to bribery in order to get permission from Dorm-Mistress to enter a lady’s room. Not only was this hilarious (the fact that she’s so shameless about suggesting a bribe, for one thing), but Dorm Mistress really is adorable in an almost creepy kind of way. First of all, she wants to be bribed for the permission alone, and then again to allow him more than three minutes in the room.

Not subtle at all.

Offerings Get!

With Dorm Mistress now in her room happily watching a DVD she confiscated off a student before, Kanae proceeds to scare the daylights out of Kanako by turning up at her door. Meanwhile my love for  Father Kanae increases with every further second of this episode.

Yes. Yes, you should.

Yes. Yes, you should.

Kanako tried to use the its too late excuse, but Mariya urges him to come in. The fiend~

Kanako tried to use the 'it's too late' excuse, but Mariya urges him to come in. Have I ever mentioned that I really hope the merchandising companies for Maria+Holic end up mass-producing that awesomely terrifying clock?

Its called perversion. Youll get used to it.

Oh Priest-kun, you're so cute. ❤

Of course, Kanae never gets anywhere in his extremely stiff (but incredibly amusing) conversation with Kanako (witnessed from the sidelines by one very amused trap and his maid), because just as he’s about to get to the point, Dorm Mistress reappears declaring that his time is up. It turns out the movie she confiscated was so boring she didnt want to finish it, and poor Kanae is promptly thrown out of the building and into the rain. However, someone is soon to find him there…and thus the priest falls in love again.

Theres enough room in this guys heart for everyone, it seems.

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

This has been, most definitley, the best episode of Maria+Holic yet. To say “I laughed” would be an enormous understatement; reliving the episode by writing the review had me giggling as well. However, it brings with it a tinge of sadness as the next one will be the last one. Please Shaft, please, Kanae is too freaking amazing to be limited to two episodes (if he’s going to feature in the next one at all). He’s shaping up to be the best male character in a school comedy next to Hosaka himself, which is quite an achievement. We need a second season of this. Because episode 11 just got full marks out of 5.
