Moeronpan returns from hiatus! Did you miss me? Well even if you didnt, too bad for you, because a heap of new reviews are going up throughout the next few days. Starting with this long overdue one for the third last episode of Natsume Yuujinchou.

Has Natsume ever made a face like that before...?
Has Natsume ever made a face like that before…?

I’m quite sure this is a filler episode, although at this point I cant say for certain as I still havent gotten around to checking out the whymsical-looking manga. As filler episodes go, however, it’s pretty decent, and got a few chuckles out of me. Does anybody remember that episode of Cardcaptor Sakura where Sakura and Kero have a little fight, and Kero goes off on his own for a bit out of spite? It’s much the same thing. Now that I think about it, Kero and Nyanko-sensei are pretty similar; they’re both pretty ridiculous gluttons and both have far more awe-inspiring ‘true forms’.  Besides adding nothing to the overall plot, the other thing that made me suspect this doesnt happen in the manga was that Natsume’s pretty impatient. Would his true character have gotten that irritated at Nyanko-sensei to the extent that he told him to leave? It was like he was PMSing or something, which, when I consider how girly he is, may not be far from the truth. Anyway. The episode begins Nyanko-sensei already off on his lonesone, trying and failing to catch his own dinner. He seems to be considerably hungover, which may be why he isnt taking the easy route of transforming into a more efficient hunting-form. He’s so out of it that he falls down into a hole, where he comes across a girl. This happened with that Kero episode of CCSakura too…he went off and met a little girl. Perhaps bratty mascots are required to meet innocent little girls to calm themselves down. This girl, however, is stuck in this hole because she fell in it too.

She also thought that Nyanko-sensei was a white piglet, and I do not blame her.

We then go back in time a bit to before this happened, to all the events leading up to drunken Nyanko-sensei falling in a hole. As we learn, he did a number of annoying things; he ate all the shrimp in the fridge that wasnt for him. Also, Natsume learns that if he’s going to borrow a CD from a friend, he shouldnt leave it where a big fatso cat can step on it.

I cant help but wonder if this CD reflects Natsumes musical tastes or if his friend forced it on him.

Natsume tells him to leave rather fiercely, and I’m still wondering exactly how in character this was for him. He did seem to regret it later, I guess. Nyanko-sensei shouts some rather amusing insults at him and leaves as he is told, thinking that he can go party with the other youkai in the forest. To my amusment, when he finds them, they are busy talking about a certain other youkai that is annoying, loud and greedy, who drinks all their sake and gets drunk all the time, and generally how he is unpleasant. Gee, I wonder who they were talking about? I cant help but wonder if Nyanko-sensei/Madara is bipolar. His personality does  a complete 180 when he’s Madara, after all.

I couldnt -not- use this cap.

Protip: Dont talk about others behind their back when they are right behind yours.

Nyanko-sensei ‘punishes’ the youkai, and adopts the human form he has used in other episodes to go into the town and see what fun he can have there. Personally, I really really love Nyanko-sensei’s form as a human. I guess he really loves being in a skirt or something, although it’s more likely that he knows being a pretty girl can have its advantages. Especially when Natsume’s idiot friends are involved, who meet ‘her’ and decided to buy ‘her’ lunch. However,  they soon regret it when they find out about Nyanko-sensei’s bottomless stomach and their wallets pay the penalty. Eventually he grows bored of the two guys after they can no longer use any more money on ‘her’, and leaves them.

What a cute face! I wonder if Nyanko-sensei based this form on Reiko...

Hes hardly the womanliest maiden, but a pretty face works wonders on a stupid guy. Or two.

Why would you put a bench right in front of a vending machine. Also woah tiny hands much? Looks like he has fingers growing out of the end of his arm.

Back on Natsume’s end, he’s starting to feel guilty so he decides to go and look for the rolypoly fat cat and make up with him. He cant seem to find him anywhere, however. He does run into his classmate and the little girl that will end up in the hole later, however.

Daaaaw, shes all little and stuff.

D'aaaaw, she's all little and stuff.

During his solitary travels, at some point Nyanko-sensei also ran into some other youkai that, having caught wind of Nyanko-sensei and Natsume’s ‘separation’, assumes he may have given up on waiting for the Book of Friends. He says then that he’ll go take it for himself, which pisses off Nyanko-sensei enough to have him transform into Madara and show that ugly guy who’s boss here.

Awesome shot of Madara, by the way.

It has green blood, too. Creepy.

His foster family, meanwhile, are taking care of a cute little kitten that a friend owns. The parts with Natsume playing with the kitten and no doubt thinking that the well-behaved little guy was so much better than certain other blobcats were really cute, by the way. Kittens make everything adorable. However, it was quite amusing to have Nyanko-sensei consider coming back and then see Natsume playing with another cat and then leave again right away. How scandalous!

AAAAAW. I want one.

AAAAAW. Although in this cap the kitten seems to look more like a dog.

Nyanko-sensei gets a bit upset and so goes and hits the bottle to drown his sorrows, to the other youkai’s dismay. I’m not really sure where youkai get their alcohol from, but I’m pretty sure he just used all theirs up.  Drunk Nyanko-sensei is really amusing, however. That cat can really drink.

Youve got to limit yourself, you know.

Yknow the thing bout Smurfs izzat they don take crap from nowun.

And now we return to where we started, Nyanko-sensei falling down a hole. Exactly why it takes him so long to figure out the easiest way of getting out of the hole I dont know, but I assume that hangovers impede his transformation abilities. The little girl has decided to be his friend, and when it eventually starts to rain, she starts freaking out, because apparently her mother told her that rabbits die in the rain. (Yeah, I dont know either) She assumes that this also applies to fatcats, and tries to protect Nyanko-sensei from the lethal raindrops. Eventually she somehow manages to fall asleep, however. Natsume, on the other hand, had gone to look for Nyanko-sensei again when it started to rain.

Nyanko-sensei would probably make a great pillow, too.

Natsume really doesnt seem to have much to choose from in regards to shirts. He seems to always wear this manly pink number here.

Nyanko-sensei manages to sober up enough after the girl had fallen asleep to get them both out of the hole, however. This scene really was quite reminiscent of Spirited Away, I thought… it was likely a homeage. Although I never knew Madara could fly, and he certainly seemed a bit bigger than normal…Then again, this is a filler episode, so I take any facts learned from it with a grain of salt. Although Nyanko-sensei is definitley the drinking type. Definitley.

I also dont know how he stopped the sleeping girl falling off, but whatever.

Of course, our two leads reunite again and can now act as if the whole episode didnt happen. Which is what generally happens with filler episodes. But it was still a fun ride for me. It was nice to have an episode centered around Nyanko-sensei being funny and selfish, so the final score out of 5 melonpan is:
