A loli cometh.

A loli cometh.

This episode centres on the Light Music Club’s new recruit, Azusa, or Azunyan as she will find herself being referred to as more often, by both the other girls and her fans. She proves to be a nice addition, and, contrary to my initial expectations, actually a necessary one, as we shall see in this episode.  She’s even been added into the opening from this episode onwards (although strangely not the ending). The plot mainly centered around her trying to fit in with the rest of the club, but in the process, finding several things wrong with it.

Yui seemed to like Azunyan calling her senpai a whole lot. So many sparklies in this episode!

Azusa’s main gripe with the club is the fact that they spend far more time having tea and cake and lazing around being idiots than doing anything musical. As someone who is actually quite a decent guitar player, she seems to find this quite offensive. Her disgust only heightens when she finds out that even the advisor, Sawako, is joining in with the lazyness. In other words, a lot of humour here merely by showing the Light Music Club’s daily routine and how counter-productive it is.  Azusa finaly snaps at them, and it looks like its going to be up to her to try and get them back into shape.

I love Sawako-sensei so much. And I do feel the need to restate this in every episode.

Azunyan snaps adorably.

I laughed alot; particularly when Sawako almost traumatized poor Azusa by yelling at her. Sawako has serious issues, but I still love her. The angry Azusa continues to rant about the clubs flaws, having worked herself up into a frenzy, but then Yui stops her by hugging her. I found it incredibly amusing how no one can take this poor little girl seriously; they all treat her like some cute little pet already. It’s also a little amusing that despite Mio being the most level-headed of the girls she’s already gotten used to their ‘laid back’ nature.

I think I would probably calm down if Yui hugged me, too.

And then, some more fan-pandering, because KyoAni always finds a place for it. Of course its Sawako’s idea; that Azusa would look good with cat ears. She even makes her say ‘nya’, which makes the other girls swoon. And me. The pandering is so blatant, as I’ve said, but even if it isnt parody I dont care, because it’s also very funny.  Poor Azusa is trying so hard to not be the token pedobait character, but when Sawako-sensei is around, that effort is moot.

This is the part where the fanboys wondered if they should stay faithful to Mio or change alliances.

Sawako-sensei! Goodjob!

Mio seems glad that the other girls have someone new to tease…but then she starts getting rather adorably jealous. Perhaps she secretly enjoyed it after all. Asuza on the other hand is fast regetting her decision to join, although the other girls dont seem to want to allow her to leave. They’re having much too fun with their new pet, after all. They even schedule a picnic to celebrate her joining.

Why does Mugi look so evil here?

Why does Mugi look so evil here?

The picnic seems harmless enough at first, with Azusa wondering why the talented-Mio is squandering said talent in this useless club. The ‘harmless’ section of the picnic soon ends when Sawako-sensei comes along and begins to terrorize Azusa again.

Shes like some kind of force-cosplay ninja.

Personally I wish to see Sawako-sensei cosplay, too.

Eventually, Asuza decides that enough is enough. She abandons the Light Music Club without telling them, deciding that she’ll lend her talents elsewhere. She gets upset, wondering why she even joined to begin with. For some reason, however, even when she goes to some lives of other bands, they dont give her the same feeling that the Light Music Club’s live gave her, that feeling that made her want to join. She actually works herself up to tears trying to figure out why. Her absence at the club meetings, which are getting a bit more structured and incorporating actual band practice more, is noted, causing the others to feel bad. In other words, it’s one of the few serious moments in this series that actually took me by surprise.

Truly, the value Azunyan as more than a pet.

There are, but they dont have Mio in them, do they.

A rare feeling of melancholy in the Light Music Club...

Of course, we all knew Azusa was going to come back; it wasnt as if the new opening didnt give it away already. Still, it was nice to have her apologize and announce how she is going to stay.  After all, lax as the club is, the most important thing is that it’s fun.

I dont think Azunyan realized how missed she was.

And all was right with the world.

With only a few more episodes to go, I’m interested to know what kind of finale K-On! is going to build up to. Also, how Azusa’s guitar will sound with the rest of the band, and if she’s going to sing too. I’m glad that Asuza turned out to be more than just a ‘new character’; she managed to get them to actually practice some more, for one thing, and she does seem to be reasonably smart. Most of all I love her weakness for cake, so take this as a bonus:

My personal favourite moment of the episode cant be captured by still images alone.

A cute, funny and briefly heart-warming ‘power of friendship’ kind of episode. I’m also quite fond of Azunyan, and Mugi is warming up to me quickly too. At this point…I can no longer pick a favourite. They’re basically just all my favourites now. Out of 5,
