Nice to see that she cares.

This episode answers a few questions that the last one left us with as well as creating some new ones.
After Hitagi (presumably) helps to patch up the battered Koyomi (as well as calming his nerves by giving him a ‘service’ upskirt shot), Koyomi goes to visit Kanbaru. After he helps clean up her ridiculously messy room, she very matter-of-factly apologizes for the night before, because yes, that strange attacker was her after all.  She let’s him see the source of her inhuman strength; the bandage on her arm is actually concealing the fact that it’s a hairy beast’s arm, or what is referred to as the ‘monkey paw’.  Aside from being incredibly strong, however, it also has the rather inconvenient habit of sometimes moving against her will, putting her in a trance as she does so. Last night, she says, was one of those times.
She sheds more light on the past between her and Hitagi, confessing that she is a lesbian and that Hitagi was her unrequited love. Thus naturally, the fact that Hitagi rejected Kanbaru’s attempt to help her versus Hitagi looking very happy in Koyomi’s presence has sparked some rather profound flames of jealousy…
A visit to Oshino is thus in order, although he recognizes Kanbaru’s paw as not being a monkey’s, but a very particular kind of demon. Like the monkey paw in legend, it will also grant wishes…however, at the expense of the owner’s soul.

I love all the pretty shots of Hitagi in each episode.

Best moment in the episode...playing with the books like theyre water. Is this possible?

Kanbaru could pass for a boy in this shot.

LET ME SHOW YOU IT!

She's awfully chill about showing off her freaky arm. I wonder how she manages to fit it all under that very slimming bandage.

In terms of the content of this episode it’s very similar to the second episode about Mayoi, by which I mean Hitagi is barely present and Koyomi and Kanbaru talk for a very long time. However, I think that it was a lot more entertaining than the one with Mayoi. I must say that I really love Kanbaru’s character. Like Hitagi, she’s not afraid to say whatever is on her mind and can be incredibly blunt, delighting in confusing people and playing with their heads. Unlike Hitagi, she seems to do it in a much more ‘happy’ kind of way. Still, her dialogue is almost as sharp and witty and entertaining as Hitagi’s (now legendary) words. However, I’m curious how much of her cheerful facade is exactly that, a facade. She is clearly very, very jealous of Koyomi’s closeness to Hitagi, and wants ‘the old’ Hitagi back, the one who was close to her. Part of me also wonders exactly how much against her own will the attack on Koyomi was in the previous episode, too…
As for Hitagi, although she doesn’t get much screen-time at all in this episode, she makes the most of it. It feels wrong to laugh at it, but there is something morbidly amusing about her scolding her boyfriend for forgetting to take the money to Oshino when he is lying there bleeding and beaten. Her remedy for his pain – non-chalantly letting him see up her skirt, made me laugh pretty hard as well.
Shinobu the ‘vampire’ gets another brief appearance en route to see Oshino; sulking on the stairwell, apparently because Oshino ate some donuts in front of her. This only makes me even more interested in her…she seems adorable. When will we get to learn more about her? As she’s also a vampire, I assume it will also shed more light on Koyomi himself. We do at least see more of Koyomi’s good nature…I mean he sought to help Kanbaru with her ‘oddity’ after she beat the crap out of him the night before.
The episode is visually lovely, of course, with lots and lots of red courtesy of Kanbaru’s room. All those books, by the way, are apparently BL doujinshi (there is a very amusing little BL-related exchange in which Kanbaru tries to determine whether Koyomi is an ‘uke’ or a ‘seme’). Kanbaru’s house, which looks a lot more like a large dojo, is also very beautiful.

I pretty much doubled over laughing from Koyomis bizarre Doraemon expression. For some reason he reacted this way when Kanbaru revealed her orientation.

I wonder if Oshino just sits here like this all day.

More of these earthy colours and silhouettes.

Apparently she is sulking, but she seems to always look like this, so who can tell?

He totally doesnt look trustworthy with that kind of a leer.

I enjoyed this episode, despite being very dialogue-heavy, although it wasn’t one of the better episodes. The dialogue was at least strongly delivered and the content of it was interesting, so that’s fine by me. It’s these sort of episodes that make you really remember that this was originally a novel – but SHAFT make sure to keep the visuals interesting. I’m hoping this arc has a satisfying conclusion.
