I know I had stopped capping the intro pictures after I gave up on trying to make sense out of them, but this one was just too awesome not to.

For once, this episode actually begins immediately where it left off in the last episode; when Jun calls Marui out of class to ask her something, she prepares herself for a confession of love. What she gets is him asking her what colour she would prefer for a class poster….which was more surprising than the confession would have been as she hadn’t expected it.  Thus the first discussion of the episode; how sometimes it’s more surprising when something doesn’t happen. Examples of this range from the everyday (when a certain train line actually comes on time) to more sly jabs at corporations (the first batch of PS3s not having any bugs)
Next, Nozomu decides that Japanese people are not good at admitting to their mistakes or crimes, so decides that he and everyone needs to do ‘confession training’. Together, they learn about heartfelt confessions and then confess to a number of things they are ‘guilty’ of. However,  although Nozomu originally thought that ‘confession’ being a priority was a good thing, Matoi points out that were this the case, the world of manga would become very boring; drawing up examples from a certain detective manga and a certain crime-thriller manga to show how boring they would be if the criminals all confessed to their crimes immediately.
After a brief visit to the future to catch a glimpse of all the characters in an aged state, the episode takes a turn for the artistically bizarre. In this segment, Nozomu and Kafuka ride a ‘mystery’ train with a fixed destination and discuss how people often pretend they are still trying to decide on something even after they have already made up their mind – and how this becomes obvious when someone suggest the opposite.

Capped Arai-sensei just because she doesnt seem to appear much anymore.

What was expected to be Kino-service was actually not! Surprise!

I never would have thought such angsty and profound words could come from someone like Maria.

Dramatic scarf is dramatic.

Uh wow Chiri, wtf. This is what her heartfelt confession looked like.

Uh wow Chiri, wtf. This is what her 'heartfelt confession' looked like.

Oh Harumi, what a shameful confession.

I think this was a pretty solid episode in the comedy department, particularly in the way of pop culture references. The ‘absence of something being more unexpected gag’ was admittedly not some of the best material the show has offered, however it doesn’t drag on for too long at least. The best part of the episode was the ‘confession training’…a segment that really was just brilliant in it’s ridiculousness. The notion behind the ‘training’ was amusing enough, however it was the manga-related humour…the criminal in Detective Conan admitting his guilt right off the bat, and Light in Death Note admitting he was Kira straight away, that was pure comedy gold.
The train segment was…bizarre. The rest of the episode was a little subdued in terms of artistry, and then this section came along and blew me away. The oddness was pretty unnecessary – it didn’t help the joke in any way, which could have carried on in the show’s ‘normal’ style just fine -but it certainly made things more interesting. As for the joke itself; it was one that amused me, as I’m guilty of demonstrating this exact behaviour. (“should I buy this figure or that figure?” “How about That figure?” “Oh but That figure has certain faults A, B and C, and it’s expensive.” “Haven’t you made up your mind already, then..?”) The conclusion was a little predictable, but I still laughed anyway. There was also the rather tantalizing little tidbit here; when Kafuka asked Nozomu if he had decided on ‘a woman’ and he said that he had…

Parts of this episode were perfect, other parts just fine, so I still wouldn’t give it full marks. I feel this one came close though, in terms of how much it made me laugh.
