...I just can't take Sam's outfit seriously enough to be intimidated by him when he's evil.

Marin tries but fails to purify Warin, Sam and Ichikawa, and both her and Kanon reluctantly have to fight them. Eventually however the two combine their power and return the three to normal, although they fall unconscious. After Marin and Kanon leave the three to recover at Kanon’s house, they decide to see if their new power has helped Urin and so go under the sea, paying a visit to Marin and Urin’s own home to see if Urin returned there. Sure enough, she has…but although she seemed to have returned to the normal Urin, she immediately reverts to the ‘dark’ Urin the second she sees Kanon in Marin’s presence.  Marin is still unable to convince her that there is nothing wrong with ‘sky people’, nor Kanon, and their new power fails to work on Urin at all. As a matter of fact, it results in the two losing their Miko powers completely and falling under Sedna’s ‘darkness’. When they do so, however, they learn the truth about this ‘heart of darkness’, including what Sedna actually is. It turns out that Sedna was the manifestation of all the sorrow and anguish ever felt by the people on the island that they had ‘cast into the sea’…

Very sparkly.

Personally, I think this is possibly the best episode in the series so far, and unless the next episode doesn’t have a disappointing ending then I guess it would be the best one, period. True, there’s a lot of magical-girl flavoured cheese in it, but that’s not to say it’s completely generic. This whole time I was thinking that the idea of “Sedna” was the series’ major flaw; ‘she’ was built up to be a typical, Sauron-esque baddy that did nothing but sit back and send out minions to be defeated one after the other, but this episode changed all that. Having this ‘baddy’ be something that everyone is responsible for in some way; something that is a part of everyone, is quite interesting. It also pushes a strong message of not keeping feelings bottled up inside to the point where they become like this – something refreshingly different to the typical ‘love conquers all’ message of pretty much every other magical girl anime ever.
What I also liked was how, at least in this episode, Urin is not going to be won back easily. This was something I had been dreading – for a second it seemed like Urin had gone back to normal as easily as a big flash of sparklies from Marin and Kanon. I’m thinking that the ‘power of love’ is still going to win her back in the final episode, but I hope that it’s at least impressive in some way. Some of the scenes are also quite emotional; I really liked the scene when Marin and Kanon ‘relived’ moments of the island people’s sorrows, such as Kanon’s own mother when her husband died.
This episode also gave us the opportunity to see inside Marin and Urin’s ‘house’, which we hadn’t actually seen since the first episode. It was an interesting and very sweet little segment that I hope we can return to. Never mind how confused I still am about the dynamics of mermaid underwater living (I would think sleeping in a bed underwater would be a little uncomfortable, let alone a little illogical)

This is probably one of the cutest caps in the series so far.

Those blankets look incredibly not wet. Or underwater, for that matter.

The dialogue and plot is as cheesy as ever, but it has proven time and time again than it does drama and emotion remarkably well. Out of 5,
