Summary:

It’s time for the showdown with Lucifer!  It turn out that Lucifer was actually working with someone behind the scenes, and that person is someone Emilia is very familiar with… a high priest named Orba.  Emilia is devastated at the news.  Before Orba can give his big villain’s speech, Sadao steals his thunder by accurately predicting his motivations.  Orba didn’t want to get up-staged by Emilia so he decided to get rid of her and Satan in one fell swoop.  Lucifer gets tired of all the talking and shoots down Alsiel, forcing Sadao and Emilia to make a run for it.

Lucifer in all his demonic glory.

Sadao very quickly figures out that Lucifer has been feeding on negative emotions, which is why he’s still so powerful magically.  Lucifer ends up cutting them off and wonders why Sadao isn’t feeding on negative emotions too to gain back his power.  Sadao simply replies that it isn’t his thing, and soon afterwards gets hit with one of Lucifer’s energy beams.  So he uses the last of his powers to transport himself and Emilia in front of a highway bridge.  Unfortunately, Lucifer again corners them, this time blasting a hole through Sadao’s body.  Laughing maniacally, Lucifer then ends up destroying the highway bridge.

However, a strong magical force stops the bridge from falling.  Sadao has regained his powers due to the negative energy caused by Lucifer’s attack.  While Sadao holds the bridge, Emilia transforms into her hero form and fights Lucifer.  Alsiel also eventually comes to her aid, having been revived by Sadao.  Together, the two manage to defeat Orba while Sadao deals with Lucifer personally.  After the battle is finished, the three end up having to explain things to Chiho, who had witnessed everything.  Surprisingly, she believes them.  Not long after that, Emilia’s allies finally arrive in modern day Tokyo.

Emilia, you should probably be more worried about something else…

Emilia gains white hair when she’s in hero mode. And some armor and a cool sword too.

While Emilia’s allies fill her in on what’s happening in Ente Isla, Sadao uses up most of his powers to fix the bridge and erase the memories of any witnesses.  Emilia’s allies later return back home, while Emilia is stuck in this world due to having used up her holy power.  Sadao is also similarly stuck, but he doesn’t seem to mind too much.

A glimpse at Emilia’s allies.

My Opinion:

A lot of people are saying this felt like a final episode.  It certainly felt like one to me!  Fortunately, Hataraku Maou-sama is slated to be 13 episodes long, so it’s only the end of one story-arc.

This episode was the best of all the ones we’ve had so far.  There was great suspense, action, and drama.  The plot reveals actually felt believable, and all the character interactions were great.  So great.  Emilia and Sadao’s interactions especially were wonderful.  Even if they never end up together romantically, I think they have great chemistry.  It’s nice to see their relationship developing from enemies to “grudgingly friends” compared to what we saw in episode 1-2.  Although Emilia would never admit it, her concern for Sadao is pretty noticeable whenever Sadao got hurt in this episode.

Sadao also manages to be a very likeable character, despite also keeping his slightly evil personality.  He’s still obsessed with world domination, but he’s also much more responsible than his underling, Lucifer.  Even though he could have just used his powers to warp back home, Sadao decides to use it to fix Tokyo and would rather first go back to work at the fast-food joint than just drop everything and return home.  I guess you could just say his priorities are messed up, or maybe he really doesn’t want to return to Ente Isla.  But whatever the case, this makes him look somewhat noble, even knowing he’s a Dark Lord.

Overall, this was a great episode!  Sadao may have defeated one antagonist, but there’s no guarantee that there won’t be others trying to follow Lucifer’s path.  And with Chiho caught up in all this mess now, things are going to be interesting.  I’m really looking forward to future episodes.

Out of five for this episode:

I just love Emilia’s face here.
