It feels a little weird to be reviewing a Christmas episode now that we’ve just stepped into the New Year, but here it is!

Well, even a Phantom Thief has a day job, you know.

Kaito Kid has completely disappeared for three months, leaving Inspector Nakamori worried.  It is soon revealed that the regular Kaito has just been very busy with mundane life—getting over a cold and worrying about finals.  Due to his sudden absence, a greedy mall owner decides to fabricate a fake heist in order to make his mall more famous.  The fake heist claims that Kaito Kid will steal the giant star atop the Christmas tree in front of the mall that night, on Christmas Eve.

The more I see of Inspector Nakamori, the more I can’t help but like him.

The real Kaito is obviously oblivious, and helps Aoko set up a Christmas party.  However, he does soon get word about the fake heist on TV, and is furious at the news.  At the mall, a fake Kaito Kid attempts to steal the star, but is quickly caught by Inspector Nakamori.  However, the real Kaito Kid arrives on the scene, not only making off with the star, but knocking the giant Christmas tree over onto the mall (and heavily damaging it) in the process.

Moral of the story: Don’t mess with Kaito Kid.

And then all the fangirls swooned.

I’m just going to leave this here…

My Opinion:

This episode adapts a manga chapter that had never been animated previously.  While I did enjoy the episode, some people wondered if this particular chapter/episode was too out-of-character for Kaito Kid.  People think that this is OOC because Kaito usually doesn’t do anything too “villainous” outside of stealing things, and he doesn’t hurt people unless it’s necessary.  Personally, I don’t think this was too far-fetched for Kaito to do.

First of all, you do have to remember that someone was trying to make a quick profit out of the Kid’s heists, which is something Kaito takes very seriously.  Kaito has too much pride to let the mall-owner off scot-free.  Secondly, I doubt that there were any people left in the mall, since everyone was gathered around the tree.  While I do think that Kaito destroying the mall was a bit much, I suppose this serves as a good warning for anyone else who thinks sending out fake heist notices is a good idea.

That bit of rambling aside, I did notice that the quality of this episode was a bit poorer than usual, though I chalk that up to the animators trying to rush the episode out before their holidays.  Also, Akako was in this episode but… she didn’t really do much.  I suppose she just showed up to remind the audience that she’s still around, but then that leaves the question of “where the hell is Hakuba?”

Overall, this was more of a wacky, comedic Magic Kaito episode; which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  It was a fun watch even if it wasn’t really plot relevant in the grand scheme of things.  Also, Inspector Nakamori’s relationship with Kaito Kid sure is… complicated.

Out of five:

As cool as Kaito Kid may seem, Kaito’s still just your average(?) high school boy.
