As Kaito Kid is finishing one of his heists, he gets intercepted by another phantom thief who calls himself Chat Noir. Chat Noir challenges the Kid to a showdown before leaving—who will be the first to steal the Golden Eye? After doing some research on this new rival, Kaito learns that Chat Noir (French for “Black Cat”) is a fairly well-known phantom thief in France. The object of this challenge is the Golden Eye, a ring with a golden cat’s eye jewel that was supposedly owned by the late Marie Antoinette.
Kaito manages to sneak into the hotel where the heist will be, by tagging along with Aoko as she brings her dad (who’s on the job) lunch. Once there, Kaito learns about the hotel’s security systems that have been put into place by a main named Alain Cartier. A strange lady also appears, stating that her name is Ruby Jones and that she’s an American investigator sent on behalf of an insurance company. Cartier suggests that Nakamori wear the Golden Eye on his finger on the night of the heist to prevent both phantom thieves from nabbing it.
On the night of the heist, Kaito gets a call from Hakuba, who is on vacation in Paris. Hakuba had heard about Chat Noir’s and the Kid’s showdown, and decides to offer the Kid some info about Chat Noir (despite Kaito firmly denying that he’s actually the Kid). Armed with this new information, Kaito sets out to have his fated showdown with the French phantom thief.
Not too much action this episode, as this episode’s just setting up the plot and the heist. And hey, nice to see you again Hakuba! Still kind of disappointed by his appearance, though. His appearance was so brief; it felt more like a cameo than him actually being a character in this series. And the reason for his disappearance is basically because he was on vacation? What the hell high schooler has a months long vacation? Also, Hakuba just suddenly and magically knows that Kaito is Kaito Kid. Due to A-1 Picture’s skipping a bunch of manga chapters, they’ve induced their own plot whole, which isn’t great. Maybe if they hadn’t spent so much time re-animating Conan cases then this wouldn’t have happened.
Bitterness aside, I don’t actually remember too much about this particular heist so it should be fun to see how everything unfolds. We have three suspects that could be Chat Noir; though sadly the final moments of the episode do somewhat spoil who it is. At least the next episode is all dedicated to the heist, which should be an exciting watch.
Overall, this was a so-so episode. I’m still not liking how A-1 Pictures is handling Hakuba. I mean, I don’t really like the guy but I still feel bad that he’s getting so little attention in a Kaito Kid series… seeing as he’s Kaito Kid’s RIVAL (when Conan isn’t poking his nose into things, that is). With the Kaito Kid anime about to be wrapped up soon (we’re at 18 episodes already?!?) I hope Hakuba gets some more time to shine before things start going into the end-game.
Anyway, out of five for this episode:
