Summer vacation is over, which means the girls all have to go back to school. On their first day back their assignment is woodcutting, so everyone splits into separate groups to work on their project. Hotaru and Komari quickly build a bookshelf, while Renge and Natsumi are lost on what to do. Ultimately, Renge assembles a rather ingenious invention.
At lunchtime, Renge helps to serve curry, which makes Natsumi and Komari remember an incident from their past. Kaede was still a student at the school, Komari and Natsumi were just grade schoolers, and Renge was still a baby. Hikage had to bring Renge to school one day because there was no one to watch her at home, and Renge accidentally causes a lot of mayhem in the school, ending with a large pot of spilled curry.
In the last part of the episode, the focus shifts to Komari, who finds her old stuffed teddy bear while cleaning her room. Recalling all the memories of the times she spent with the bear, Komari goes to Hotaru’s house to ask for help restoring the plush.
This was a really great episode. The main theme of this episode was essentially about memories.
The first part of the episode was just the girls goofing off while building things with wood. Natsumi and Renge really need to interact more because they’re really fun to watch together. The second part of the episode was probably one of the funnier “arcs” in the whole series. The spilled curry bit was the most over-dramatic yet hilarious thing. Man, Renge, you sure were a “troublesome” baby.
The last part of the episode was also rather nice, with Komari reminiscing about an old toy. I’m sure everyone has that one old toy that they still have fond memories of. It was just really heartwarming to see Komari go through all the effort to restore it even though she wasn’t very good at sewing. It was also rather cute to see Hotaru making plushies of everyone in the meantime. I dunno about you, but I’m quite fond of plots like that.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. It managed to be both funny and sweet, and pretty much every major character got some focus. I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing some more snippets of Renge as a baby.
Out of five for this episode:
